It's the end of the world as we know it...

I often wonder where it's all going.

I don't think people understand what's currently happening to us, to human interaction, to our current idea of society. It's very easy, and perhaps all a little too comfortable to percieve the changes happening within the online world, the world of so-called "Social Networking" and the mobile world, to be nothing more than a fad, a new distraction. Which means too few people realise that we're undergoing a fundamental shift, a transformation, a step change in the way our society manages itself.

The whole of humankind is in contact with itself for the first time, everyone, everywhere is your neighbour. People no longer need Villages, Towns, Cities to get together and communicate, to make descisions, to make govenrments, to make friends. The whole concept of physical congregation is slipping away. Facebook really is becoming the future of society. Is this a good thing? I'm not sure, like everything it has it's positives and it's negatives, but I'm sure of one thing, too many people aren't seeing it for what it is. Too many people are burying their heads in the sand.

We are sat, witnessing the dawn of a new age, ushering in a new form of society, and around half of us are still passing it off as a fad. For over 10 years now I've been listening to people tell me that social will never take off, that Facebook or Twitter or Youtube will be gone in 6 months…

OK, first let's get something straight, time for a startling revelation... they're just brands.

However, the concepts they stand for, online status, status & content subscription, realtime notifications, global realtime communication, online profiles, video sharing, socially aware search, they're what's important, and they'll be around for a very long time. It's time to wake up and realise that it's everything else that's going to die… Newspapers, Magazines TV, Cinema, Bookshops, DVDs, BlueRays, gone… because they've been superceeded.

Over the next few years the innovations online, in mobile, and in the way that we access social content will further revolutionise the way we view the world. Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, or whatever social platform you want to be on, that's the place to watch it happen, that's the viewing platform for the end, or the begginning, of the world.
